West
Lake Shore Road
This building, constructed in 1887, originally housed the
Schaedler and Rhein Winery. At the height of its operation, it had
a capacity of 80,000 gallons, stored in 2,000 gallon casks, making
it one of the largest wineries on the Island. The 18th Amendment
effectively halted its operation and the building sat vacant until
1935, when it was purchased and converted into a bar-restaurant,
known as Camp Kellisle.
Over
the years the structure was considerably enlarged. Its most recent
renovation took place in 1991 when the interior was modernized and
the name changed to West Bay Inn. However, much of the original
stone and timber construction is still in evidence and it retains
much of its original character.
