Lake Shore Road
This
house was built in 1876 by Erastus Huntington, one of the Island's
leading citizens and operator of the Island's general store. In
1905, Frederina Hamilton opened the residence as "The
Inn" to serve summer visitors. It remained an
"hotel/boarding house" until about 1940 when Capt. Franc
Hamilton and his wife, Katherine, established their residence
here.
Frank
Hamilton was a long-time Great Lakes ship captain, skippering the
ARROW, CHIPPAWA, and PUT-IN-BAY, as well as a local businessman.
Ire is perhaps best known as the preeminent historian of early
Great Lakes ships and shipping.
This
19th century Italianate-styled "cottage" has been
reserved and preserved by the present owners for the enjoyment
of summer guests.
