In 1892, Charles Dodge built
this Queen-Anne style house for Otto Brown.
For many years, Brown was a foreman at the Kelley's Island Wine
Company. In 1879, he acquired the Jacob Rush Winery and, eight
years later, in 1887, merged a number of the smaller wineries on
the Island into the Sweet Valley Wine Company. In 1900, he formed
the short-lived Union Wine Company. However, Otto Brown's son,
Sherman, kept the vineyards and lived in this house until his
death in the late 1970's. The house stayed in the Brown family
until it was sold to Paul and Beverly Johnson in 1984.
As splendid inside as out, the Sweet Valley Inn, essentially
unchanged since it was built, is now operated as a fine bed and
breakfast hostel.
