In
1865, August Schaedler built this impressive wine cellar for the
production and ageing of his Catawba and Delaware still wines.
This particular cellar had a capacity of 20,000 gallons. Later,
nearby, he built a second cellar which brought the total
production and storage capacity of the two cellars to 55,000
gallons, making it the second largest winery on the Island. About
1900, the Schaedler cellars became part of a combination of
wineries known as the Union Wine Company. This business ceased
operation c. 1911.
Since that time, the structure has been
in private hands and is not open to the public. The building
itself sets atop a vaulted cellar, the entrance to which can be
seen on the south front of the building.
