Lime Kiln

Cameron Road; on private property, not open to public inspection

Today only the ruins of this early lime kiln, built about 1855 by Andrew Cameron, remain, one of the few surviving elements of the first commercial quarries on the Island. By the 1870's, a large bank of modern lime kilns was erected on the west side of North Bay, the foundations of which still can be seen through the underbrush along the shore. To accommodate and facilitate the shipment of lime, new docks and storage bins were built, the remains of which are still evident along the north shore and extending out into North Bay. The Island kilns were closed in 1909 when lime-burning operations were opened in Marblehead and Duluth.
