In
the fall of 1861 , Datus Kelley and his wife, Sarah, conveyed to
the village as a gift this fine stone structure. Dedicated to
"Truth," it was to be used as a site for all sorts of
meetings and public. entertainments. And, indeed, it has been!
Religious groups held meetings here; public. theatricals were
staged, and, in all, it became and has remained the community
center.
In addition, for many years, the basement housed municipal offices
and, later, ;just to the northeast, a ;jail was constructed. Today
the Town Fall is still the site for public functions ranging from
high school commencements to athletic events. It is also the
headquarters for the Island F.M.T. unit and includes a local
physician's office.
