North
end of Division Street
These impressive
natural earthworks were formed about 20,000 years ago by the
movement of a massive glacier which covered this region of North
America and moved steadily southward, grinding out these furrows
in the unyielding limestone.
Though these are the most impressive natural wonders of their kind
to be seen on the continent, there are a number of other glacial
grooves on the Island. It is also to be noted that, through the
quarry operations over the years, many other grooves were
destroyed.
Markers at the
site describe in detail how the grooves were formed as well as
giving the history of the area when it was part of the quarrying
operation.
