At the north end of
Division Street, where lane turns off to North Bay
During
the "hey-day" of the quarry operations by the Kelley
Island Lime and Transport Company, the quarries (north, east, and
west) employed over four hundred men at a time. Many of these were
seasonal workers, some coming all the way from southern and
eastern Europe.
To house some of these workers, a large, two-story dormitory,
whimsically called the "Incubator," was built in the
area where now the glacial grooves are to be seen. To supply bread
for these "itinerant" workers were two bake ovens. One,
destroyed when the grooves were excavated, was located ;just west
of the Incubator. The other, still standing, is this one at the
north end of Division Street. Built c. 1875)
A second large building stood on the open space at the north end
of Division Street. It was used as a general store for quarry
workers and later as a net house and boat storage spare for the
commercial fishermen. It was destroyed some years ago when the
state of Ohio acquired title to the land.
